Here at Danks, we have for a long time been committed to our environmental responsibilities and many people have played a vital part in bringing about the initiatives in place today. A key cornerstone of that commitment has been Danks’ role as an active member since 2005, of the National Packaging Covenant. With a mandate to making continual improvements in the design, material selection and labelling of packaging and the management of packaging waste, the NPC Committee at Danks, can be proud of its achievements to date.
As stated in the 2006/07 Annual Report, of the estimated 65 tonnes of packaging waste generated each year from our Distribution Centres and of. ces, about 81% is now diverted from land. ll to recycling facilities. This diversion rate has been achieved through the installation of plastic . lm balers and cardboard recycling bins.
Environmental initiatives have been put in place from the sourcing of products through to instore.
To build on this work, a new appropriately-named “Green Team” has been established - made up of people who are passionate about the environment and prepared to take on a greater role in bringing about change.
With all Business Units represented, the Green Team’s mandate is to come up with ways to get us all involved in sustainability. Don’t worry if you haven’t got the answer to global warming (well not right now anyway) - ideas can be as simple as turning your computer to ‘sleep mode’ when you are at a break, switching off lights when not needed etc., right through to sourcing of sustainable timber products and working with like-minded supplier partners.
In fact, environmentally-friendly initiatives not only bring about ef. ciencies but cost-savings, as we become more conscious of energy and resource use.
To get things moving, look out for a survey where you can contribute your ideas on how we can make a difference.
As we rapidly approach our 150th birthday as an organisation, it’s a great time to get behind this to promote Danks’ role as a good corporate citizen.
“Green” initiatives will be a regular feature in OneDanks and a special program is being developed to encourage and reward your participation.
